What biological age actually measures

Your birthday counts trips around the sun. Your biological age counts what those trips did to you.

Two people, one birth year, a decade apart

Chronological age is bookkeeping. It advances at exactly one year per year for everyone, regardless of how you sleep, what you eat, how much you move, or what you have survived.

Biological age is different. It is an estimate of how worn your cells actually are — and two people born in the same month can be a decade apart on it. That gap, in either direction, is your Delta.

Where the signal comes from

Sitting on top of your DNA is a layer of chemical marks called methylation. These marks do not change the genes you inherited; they change which ones are switched on, and how loudly. That layer shifts across your life in patterns regular enough to read.

An epigenetic clock reads hundreds of thousands of those positions at once and resolves them into an age estimate. It is not a guess based on how you look or what you report — it is a measurement taken from your own cells.

The clocks behind your number

Not all clocks answer the same question, which is why a good report shows more than one.

  • OMICm Age — a biological age estimate built by combining methylation with other molecular data, developed with researchers at Harvard
  • DunedinPACE — not an age but a speed: how many biological years you are accruing per calendar year
  • SYMPHONYAge — age estimated system by system, so you can see which parts of you are ahead or behind
  • Telomere length and immune cell proportions, both estimated from the same methylation data

What it is good for

A single reading is a baseline, not a verdict. Its real value shows up on the second and third test, when you can see whether the things you changed actually moved anything.

This is a wellness and research measurement, not a diagnosis. It does not detect disease and it does not replace your doctor.
